$800,000 In Grants Going to Minnesota to Fight Sex Trafficking–The money is coming from the state Department of Public Safety Office of Justice Programs and will go toward new or enhanced projects and for law enforcement training on sex trafficking investigations. The money was approved by the Legislature and Governor Dayton and is an increase of more than $311,000 over 2016.
Last year in Minnesota, 314 youth and adult sex trafficking victims or those at risk used services supported by the grants across the state. And last year, there were 249 possible sex trafficking reports referred or initiated by the six grantees. Of those 249, 172 were investigated and 35 cases were charged out.
Sex trafficking in small towns: ‘It happens virtually anywhere.’
This article from High Plains Public Radio discusses sex trafficking mostly in Nebraska, but it does discuss how rural areas are especially in danger from sexual predators, “where isolation of victims in rural areas is a common tool used by traffickers.”
In a law enforcement sting like the NBC show “To Catch a Predator,” seven men were arrested after arriving at a home to have sex with who they believed to be a 16-year-old girl, Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux said Monday.

“I Am Jane Doe”, written and directed by Mary Mazzio, narrated by Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee Jessica Chastain, and produced by Mazzio and Academy Award nominee Alec Sokolow, follows the journey of these young girls and their mothers who have filed lawsuits against Backpage, setting these children on a collision course not only with the owners of Backpage, but with judges, powerful companies, special interest groups, and Section 230 of the U.S. Communications Decency Act, an internet freedom law that has been interpreted by federal judges to provide a safe haven for website publishers to advertise underage girls for sex.
